How it works

1

Point at any word

No selecting, no copying — just point your cursor at a word, in any app: PDFs, browsers, email, documents.

2

Double-tap

Lexio reads the sentence around it and looks up the meaning that actually fits there. Takes about a second.

3

Read the definition

See the exact meaning for that sentence, where it comes from, and how to say it — right there, no switching apps.

The problem

A dictionary gives you five meanings. You need one.

You're reading English and hit a word. The dictionary lists every meaning — literal ones that don't fit here, and none of the idioms or phrasal verbs the writer actually meant. So you guess, or you look it up and still aren't sure, or you skip it and lose the sentence. Real English isn't textbook English.

A normal dictionary

Every meaning of the word, out of context, in English only. You decide which sense fits — and hope you got the idiom right.

Lexio

Reads the whole sentence and gives you the one meaning that fits — idioms and phrasal verbs included — explained in your own language.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The free plan gives you 20 word lookups and 3 image scans per month, in Fast mode. If you want to try Pro, you can start a 3-day free trial — a card is required up-front, you can cancel any time before day 3, and you won't be charged. After the trial, Pro is $4.99/month and removes all limits and unlocks Balanced and Deep modes.

Yes — install Lexio from the Chrome Web Store and it works on any page in Chrome. Select a word or phrase, right-click and choose "Define with Lexio", or use the keyboard shortcut. It works on news sites, PDFs opened in Chrome, academic papers, and more.

For pasted text, only the word you look up and a short surrounding context window are sent to the AI provider. In the Mac app's point-at-word mode, a small capture of the screen area around your pointer is sent instead — only when you trigger a lookup, never in the background. Neither is stored on our servers after the request. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Fast mode is available on the free plan — quick and accurate for everyday reading. Pro unlocks Balanced (Gemini 2.5 Flash) and Deep (Claude Sonnet 4.5). For literature, legal texts, or academic prose, Deep gives the richest analysis.

You can paste text in any language — English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese, and Italian. Definitions can be returned in any of those languages too.

Yes — to keep the service fast and prevent abuse, every account has a per-hour credit budget. Each lookup costs 1 credit in Fast, 2 credits in Balanced, and 3 credits in Deep, reflecting the relative compute cost. Pro users get 120 credits per hour (≈ 40 Deep, 60 Balanced, or 120 Fast lookups), which comfortably covers even very heavy reading. Free users get 20 credits per hour. The budget resets every hour, automatically.

Pro also has a generous monthly safety ceiling — 20,000 credits (≈ 6,600 Deep lookups) and 500 OCR scans per month. Real readers don't come close to these; they exist to prevent automated abuse. If you ever need more, write to me directly.

Yes, cancel any time from your account settings. You keep Pro access until the end of the billing period, then automatically move to the free tier.

If you're trying Lexio for the first time, go monthly — same features, cancel any time. If reading is already a habit and Lexio fits how you read, yearly saves around a third versus paying monthly.

Yes. Lexio offers volume seats for classrooms and university departments — students and faculty get full Pro access (Deep mode, Word Bank, Anki export) under a single invoice, with onboarding support. There's no fixed list price; contact us for a demo and a quote. See the For educators section for how Lexio fits a reading curriculum.
