Lexio ("we", "our", or "us") operates the website lexio.site and the Lexio Chrome extension. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Text you submit. When you look up a word or phrase, the word and the surrounding context text you provide are sent to our server and forwarded to one of our AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google — depending on the model you select) to generate the definition. We do not store the full text you paste beyond the duration of the request.
Images you upload (OCR). If you use the "Scan image" feature, the image you upload is sent to our server and forwarded to Google's Gemini API for text extraction (with OpenAI's GPT-4o vision as a fallback). The image is not stored on our servers after the request completes.
Anonymous search logs. We record the searched word only (not the surrounding context) to generate trending word statistics shown on the homepage. These logs contain no user identifiers.
Anonymous usage counters. To enforce the free-tier usage limits we store your IP address alongside a monthly lookup and OCR scan count. This record contains only your IP, the current month, and two integers. It is used solely to apply usage limits and is not linked to any other data.
Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address and an encrypted password. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we store your email and the provider's unique identifier. We do not store passwords in plain text.
Word bank. Words you save to your word bank are stored on our servers and associated with your account so they sync across devices.
Per-user search logs. When you are signed in, we additionally record each word you look up (without context) to power your personal usage history in the admin dashboard.
Extension storage. The Chrome extension stores your language preference, saved words, and authentication token locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. This data does not leave your device except when syncing with your account.
Lexio routes your lookup requests to one of three AI providers depending on the reading mode you pick. The selected word and surrounding context are sent to the corresponding provider:
Text you submit for lookup or images you upload for OCR are subject to the privacy policy of the provider whose model processes your request. You can switch models at any time in the app.
If you use Google or Apple Sign-In, authentication is handled by the respective provider. We receive only your name, email address, and a unique identifier. We do not receive your password from these providers.
We use Plausible Analytics — a privacy-friendly, cookie-free analytics service — to count aggregate page views and understand which features are used. Plausible does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, does not fingerprint visitors, and is fully GDPR / PECR / CCPA compliant. No data is shared with third parties or used for advertising.
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other behavioural / advertising tracker.
Free accounts are subject to usage limits (currently 100 AI lookups and 3 OCR scans per calendar month, all on the Fast model). Usage is tracked per account for signed-in users, or by IP address for anonymous users. Pro accounts unlock all three models (Fast, Balanced, Deep) and have no monthly lookup limit, subject to fair-use hourly and monthly credit ceilings to prevent abuse. Usage counters reset on the 1st of each month.
Account data and word banks are retained until you delete your account. Anonymous search logs are retained for up to 12 months. Anonymous IP-based usage records are overwritten each calendar month (only the current month's count is kept). You can request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us.
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and never stored in plain text. Authentication tokens expire after 90 days.
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time. To do so, contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.

We may update this policy occasionally. If we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Lexio after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
